20 life lessons from 2020

Like many people, I thought 2020 was a wild roller coaster ride. It challenged me, it pushed me to places I never thought I’d go, and it forced me to confront a lot of things about myself.

But it wasn’t all bad.

You don’t survive a year like 2020 without learning a thing or two about life. In my case, I took away 20 lessons.

I shared this list on my Instagram and Facebook at the end of last year, and it resonated. I thought I’d share them here as well in case others might find these lessons useful as well.

For now, I’m presenting this list without much context. I hope to explore some of these themes further in future posts. In the meantime, please enjoy. 🙂

1 – There’s no need to bring your past to the future. Leave that shit behind.

2 – How you do one thing is how you do EVERYTHING.

3 – What you say “no” to is more important and more telling than what you say “yes” to.

4 – The key to happiness is knowing that you already have everything you need to be happy.

5 – A long walk (or a long bike ride) can solve almost anything.

6 – Sleep is the closest thing to the silver bullet.

7 – Laugh at your own jokes—they’re just jokes!

8 – What you give you shall receive.

9 – Willpower is overrated. Automate everything.

10 – Most resources in life are unlimited—if you choose to see them that way.

11 – Your value as a person has nothing to do with your title, role or the amount of money in your bank account.

12 – “Making it” is a moving target. Might as well enjoy the journey.

13 – Identities are made up. You’re allowed to change yours any time.

14 – To go further, slow down.

15 – Ask for more. Expect more.

16 – Recognize that emotions are just chemical reactions. And then act accordingly.

17 – Trying to “look good” is an exhausting and unworthy pursuit.

18 – Fear not; choose love.

19 – “Just be gay.”

20 – You are the shit. Act like it.
